Fuvahmulah Expedition 2027

Dates: 18-25th March 2027

The ultimate bucket list adventure to tiger shark kingdom

Hidden deep in the southern atolls lies one of the most extraordinary places on Earth—Fuvahmulah, the kingdom of Tiger Sharks. This is where I’ll be taking a small group of ocean lovers for a week that goes far beyond a typical dive trip. Expect world-class diving at its most raw and exhilarating. Daily encounters with tiger sharks are not just possible—they’re a guarantee. Between heart-pounding moments with these incredible apex predators, we’ll explore vibrant reefs, share stories, and build connections that last long after we surface.

This expedition is run alongside a dedicated local dive team and crafted by creators, for creators. Whether you’re new to underwater shooting or deeply passionate about visual storytelling, this experience is designed to elevate both your skills and your perspective. More than anything, this week is about transformation—shifting how you see sharks, the ocean, and your place within it. Come ready for adrenaline, awe, and the kind of encounters that stay with you forever. I’ve done my best to keep this bucket list trip as budget-friendly as possible, while still preserving all opportunity to fully experience this world-renowned dive destination.

Join me in Fuvahmulah for a journey that will leave you breathless, inspired, and completely hooked.

About Fuvahmulah

Fuvahmulah is a truly unique island in the Maldives. Unlike the typical atoll formations, it stands alone, rising directly from the deep blue ocean in the far south of the country. It also exists as the second-largest island in the Maldives. Getting here only requires a short 1 hour and 10 minute domestic flight from the capital, Malé.

What makes Fuvahmulah truly exceptional is it's status as a hotspot for pelagic marine life. It's location in the open ocean, combined with steep drop-offs and deep-water currents that sweep close to shore, creates the perfect conditions for attracting large, migratory species. Nutrient-rich upwellings bring in baitfish, which in turn draw an array of pelagic predators including thresher sharks, hammerhead sharks, oceanic manta rays, whale sharks, and various species of tuna. The island is also surrounded by multiple marine cleaning stations that hold a significant purpose for pelagic species. This convergence of geography and ocean dynamics makes Fuvahmulah one of the few places in the Maldives where such a wide variety of megafauna can be encountered year-round.

Historically, this natural advantage saw Fuvahmulah deeply rooted in traditional fishing culture, with generations of locals relying on the surrounding rich ocean for their livelihood. In recent years, Fuvahmulah has gained international recognition as one of the world’s premier destinations for tiger shark encounters. Unlike many dive spots where sightings are rare, the waters here offer consistent opportunities to dive alongside these powerful predators, attracting divers from around the world.

The local dive team that will be hosting us has been carefully selected not only for their high standards of tour operations, but also because of their strong interconnectedness to their dive community and to the ocean. They lead with a simple mission "to dive with intention, to tell meaningful ocean stories, and to build a community where everyone feels connected — to the sharks, to the island, and to each other".

Itinerary

Our expedition begins in Malé, the gateway to the Maldives. Your international flight have you arriving into Velana International Airport, where the domestic terminal is conveniently located within the adjacent building. From here, we’ll take a short domestic flight of approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes to Fuvahmulah—this return flight is included in your expedition cost. Once we arrive, we will be transferred from the island’s airport to our accommodation, where you’ll have time to settle in before a brief introduction at the dive shop to kick off the adventure.

Our five full days on Fuvahmulah are all entirely dedicated to diving, making the most of the island’s world-renowned marine life opportunities. Four of these will be focused on scuba diving, while one day will be dedicated to free diving, offering a different and more immersive way to experience this underwater paradise.

Each day includes two dives: a reef exploration dive and a tiger shark dive.

The reef dives will take us to a selection of world-class sites positioned around the island, with local expert guides choosing the best locations each day based on ocean conditions and marine life sightings. These dives offer the chance to encounter a wide variety of pelagic species and explore Fuvahmulah’s dramatic underwater topography.

Each day also features a dedicated tiger shark dive, giving you consistent opportunities to experience one of the island’s most iconic and sought-after encounters. The mixture of scuba diving and free diving provides a unique opportunity for differing tiger shark interactions, which personally I love to experience. This is not only from a photographers point of view but also for ocean enthusiasts that chase life changing marine life moments.
